Tour Description
Walking Weekend in Scotland and Ben Nevis.:
May 31st – June 3rd
A Walking weekend in Scotland including Ben Nevis and the Jacobite Steam Train
Scotland is a great place to explore and walk in its deep valleys and high Mountains trails. On this weekend in Scotland, we will be exploring the areas of Glencoe, Fort William and Ben Nevis.
We will also be taking one of the great steam train Journeys through the Scottish Mountains and shorelines on the “Jacobite“.
Fort William sits on the shores of Loch Linnhe. It’s a town in the western Scottish Highland ans also known as a gateway to Ben Nevis, the U.K.’s highest peak, and Glen Nevis valley which is home to Steall Falls.
Glencoe is an absolutely beautiful valley in the Scottish Highlands near Loch Leven. As well as taking in the challenge of walking Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain we will also be exploring other walks in this part of Scotland.
Highlights:
Walk Ben Nevis (Britain’s Highest Peak), Jacobite Steam Train ride, staying in Fort William, Walks in the Scottish Highlands.
Itinerary:
Day 1) Flight from Dublin to Glasgow and travel north to Fort William.
Taking an early flight from Dublin to Glasgow (flights and times will be given). We will then hire some cars between us in groups of 4 to keep expenses down. Rental cars will also give us more flexibility for our walks. Then we will travel North towards Loch Lomand and the Trossachs National Park. We will explore this area with a short walk and rest break.
Then we travel North again towards where we will be staying in Fort William, where we will be staying.
Once here we can go for a meal and relax before our big walk the following morning.
Day 2) Walk Ben Nevis (Britian’s Highest Peak) – or explore Glen Nevis.
Ben Nevis – 17Km, ascent – 1352m, approx. 7-8hrs walking.
We will need to be up early this morning to get a start at our demanding walk today of Ben Nevis We will start the walk at the Western side of Ben Nevis at the visitor centre. There is a big car park here as well as a shop in case we need extra supplies. The walk is gradual and takes in some zig-zags on good mountain track with plenty of grip.
The views can be stunning across Glen Nevis as we make our way up. We will be returning by the same route. I’m allowing approx. 8hrs to walk so a good packed lunch is essential.
We are hoping that everyone attempts Ben Nevis and for those who don’t an alternative walk will be offered.
When we have completed our walk, we will make our way back towards where we are staying and relax for the evening, hopefully feeling very chuffed with ourselves.
This small town of Fort William has plenty of bars, restaurants and even a train station. It very obviously very popular with walkers.
Day 3) Jacobite Train Ride from Fort William.
Every since Harry Potter this train ride has become world famous.
The Jacobite train Journey from Fort William to Mallaig. As we are in Fort William with very legs it may be nice to rest them for the day on this on an old steam train.
The Train travels through the Scottish Highlands taking in Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig, Loch Morar, shortest river in Britain, River Morar and finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
This should be an amazing way to travel through the Scottish Highlands.
Once back in Fort William we can explore the town a little.
Day 4) Visit Glencoe and return to Dublin.
Today unfortunately we will need to travel back to Glasgow for our return flight. On the way we should have time to visit Glencoe enroute. There are some wonderful walks in this area that we can enjoy.
Then its back to the airport for our return flight.
