Mayo is a large County in the West of Ireland with a long stretch of coastline and world famous for its Salmon fishing in many of its large rivers. On this weekend we will be visiting North mayo and staying in the coastal town of Ballina.
The town of Ballina is a lively little town, it lies at the mouth of the River Moy near Killala Bay. There are many fine Restaurants, cafes and bars as well as some unique bars where you can also get your fishing tackle. The Ox mountains sit just to the east of the town as they run along into county Sligo.
We will take in a mix of trails from flat lakeside and one of Ireland’s best coastal walks with a venture over part of the Ox Mountains on this walking weekend.
We will be staying at the 4-star Ballina Manor Hotel in the centre of town and close to all amenities.
There are many fine bars that have live music almost every day of the week.

About The Walks on our Weekend in Mayo:
Easkey Lough Loop Walk: A flat lake side walk in the Ox Mountains in county Sligo and just east to the town of Ballina. This is a wonderful walk taking in part of trye Sligo way as it makes its way near this lake.
The Walking travels along the Lough Easkey shoreline for approx. 7 kilometres and takes in the whole lake. It is a very easy walk over some bogland with some boardwalks to assist in the wetter parts. Passing along this trail you are surrounded by the Ox Mountains, forestry on the hillsides and farmlands.
WalkDetails: Approx. 7Km incline of approx. 50m. Duration 2hrs.
Carrowteige Coastal Loop Walk:
This is one of the most spectacular coastal walks in all of Ireland. Starting from the small village of Carrowteige you travel north towards the coast at Portacloy. Here there is a wonderful small beach and pier where many people come to take a dip in the Atlantic. From here you follow a trail onto the side of the coast and up towards the cliffs above. The cliff walk comes around the headland offering incredible views to the North of county Donegal and Sligo. As you make you way along the trail there are many places to stop and enjoy the cliff views near you. Then south of Mayo appears and Achill Island. The trail eventually comes out onto the road near Rinroe beach and back towards the start.
WalkDetails: Coastal Loop Walk Approx. 15Km incline of approx. 400m. Duration 4hrs.
Lurganmor Loop Walk: This walk is just to the north east of Foxford in county Mayo, famous for its woollen mills and fine blankets. The walk is at the very southern tip of the Ox Mountains and the Ox Mountain way. Starting from the yellow bridge the trail follows a small road before making its way out onto Lurganmore hill where the trail gets its name. It is a well-marked trail and once on reaching the summit the whole of North Mayo and Sligo can be visible with great views across to Nephen and Ballycroy National Park. The trail continues over this mountain and off the other side through a small Hazel wood laneway and back out onto a small road to return to the start.
WalkDetails: Loop Walk Approx. 11Km incline of approx. 260m. Duration 3hrs.

Itinerary
Walking Weekend in Mayo: Itinerary.
Day 1) Transfer from Dublin to Ballina followed by a walk Lough Easkey.
In the morning we will leave Dublin and make our way towards Ballina. The drive to Ballina takes approx. 3hrs. On the way we can take a break and stop in Strokestown to visit the famine museum here, enjoy a coffee or stretch the legs. Strokestown was once owned by the Mahon family in Roscommon. It is at the start of the famine trail along the Royal Canal towards Dublin.
Once we reach Ballina we can check in or leave our bags there before making our way to Easky Lough in County Sligo (just on the border) for our first walk of the weekend. This is a beautiful flat walk and only approx. 2.5hrs.
Then we can return to Ballina with time to freshen up before dinner.
Day 2) Coastal Loop Walk – Carrowteige
This morning after breakfast we travel out towards the small coastal village of Carrowteige in North Mayo
Its approx. a one-hour drive further west to Carrowteige for the start of this walk. Along the way we will take the coast road through Killala, Down Patrick Sea stack and the Ceide fields which we may visit on our way back if there is time.
From Carrowteige we will start our Coastal Loop walk, which I think is one of the most impressive in Ireland with its high cliffs and the crashing waves of the wild Atlantic below. Looking to the north from the cliff top we can see the Donegal coastline and Slieve League. The views towards the south are also spectacular of Belmullet, Achill and Mweelrea. If is warm enough there may be time for a dip in the sea at Portacloy beach.
On our return to Ballina there may be time to explore the town before dinner.
Day 3) Lurganmor Loop Walk, Foxford Woollen Mills – Return to Dublin
After breakfast we will book out of our accommodation and take a short drive to the town of Foxford famous for its woollen mills and quality blankets. The walk starts just outside Foxford near what is called the yellow bridge. This is a loop walk on small country roads, hazel tree laneways an open mountains trail. I have chosen this walk for its diversity and wonderful views across Mayo and Sligo.
After our walk we can drop into Foxford to visit the famous Woollen mills and a snack before making our way back towards Dublin.
This trip is open to anyone who enjoys walking, exploring and discovering some of the hidden treasures in this country.
