Glenmalure Lodge
Guided walk on Lugnaquilla with an overnight stay at the Glenmalure Lodge.
The Glenmalure Valley sits deep in the mountains of Wicklow and is one of the longest if not the longest glacial valleys in Ireland. Rising to one side of the valley is Wicklow and Leinster’s highest point, Lugnaquilla at 925m.
Details of the Walk: The walk will take us deep into the bottom of this valley and on a trail that I think to be the most scenic approach to the summit. We will take the Fraughan Glen approach on the east side of Lugnaquilla. This is a wonderful trail through some forest trails and eventually out into Fraughan Glen itself. Here you are surrounded by high walls of mountain as you make your up by the side of a small waterfall.
Once you get to the top of this incline most of your hard work is done for the day, although there are still some ascents ahead. You arrive out on a wide plateau with the ground rising to your left where you will be approaching. You will get up on to a ridge and follow this gradually towards the summit.
Once here on a fine we take the wonderful panoramic views across all of Wicklow, its coastline and mountains.
We will make our back down on another trail locally known as the Zig, Zags.
Once down there will be time to freshen up before dinner, relax, enjoy a drink before our meal together at the Glenmalure Lodge where we will be staying.
Alternative Walk along the Wicklow Way: You can also do a guided walk from Glendalough to Glenmalure. Distance 15.6Km – Height Gain 432m. Approx, 4 hours walk.
The Glenmalure Lodge sits at Drumgoff crossroads in Glenmalure valley. Its is wonderful comfortable accommodation with a warm welcome for walkers and great food.
