The Julian Alps are a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps that stretch from northeastern Italy to Slovenia. They rise to 2,864 m at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. A large part of the Julian Alps is included in Triglav National Park. They cover a great area for walking and hiking with wonderful waterfalls, deep valleys, meadows and high peaks. Triglav National Park sits just west of the town of Bled.
Triglav National Park founded in 1981, covers 880 sq Km which is approx. 4% of Slovenia’s land mass. It is famous for its glacial lakes, deep valleys, winter sports and walking trails.
Bled is really the gateway to the National Park and famous for its glacial lake and 11th century castle overlooking it. It is a small charming resort town with many restaurants and accommodations. There is also the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria which sits on the lake’s island.
