About The Rota Vicentina in Portugal
The Rota Vicentina sits on the south west of Portugal just below Lisbon. The trail starts in the Portuguese region of Alentejo.
It is a long distance walk with choice along the coast line called the Fishermen’s Trail or slightly in land called the Historical Way.
About The Trails:
Both trails are broken up into suitable walking stages. This part of Portugal is beautiful with wonderful cliff walks and sandy beaches. There are many small and colourful coastal towns where you can enjoy some great seafood along the way.
The trails have been developed over the past few years by the local communities and associations and it is a wonderful place to explore.
On this 8 day Itinerary you will experience the highlights of Rota Vicentina or the Fishermen’s trails. You will walk small sandy tracks overlooking the Wild Atlantic with wonderful sunsets in the evenings. Then you can explore some of the rivers and hills among the inland of Alentejo.
The accommodation is some of the best along the trail using small local farmhouses offering great food. some accommodations even some swimming pools and unique converted accommodations to help you relax after your days walk.
The food in Portugal and in this area is excellent with very fresh local produce and of course a wide variety of fish dishes.
Don’t worry about booking accommodations or getting transfers, because everything is taken care of for you. Just relax, enjoy the way and rest at cozy rural tourism accommodations where you’ll stay overnight and be warmly welcomed.
“Rota Vicentina is a community project, from local people to the world. It is sustained by the efforts of all partners that have common love for this region and aim for its sustainable development”.
Rota Vicentina walking trip in May 2016
We booked the Rota Vicentina self-guided tour via the Internet and got an immediate response from the organisers.
Once we arrived to Lisbon, we were picked up by Raul who drove us to the starting point of the trip (Milfontes). He was very friendly and helpful with the information. He even gave us a mobile phone with the numbers to call for pick-ups and transfers!
The accommodations were comfortable and all our hosts very extremely available to pick us up at any time. One of them even drove us to a restaurant and pick us up after dinner. In all the residences, breakfast was excellent. We were also satisfied with the packet lunch provided every morning for our walk.
As regards the walking trip itself, we liked the landscape very much, the surroundings, the nature, the colours and scents of Alentejo and the local people we met.
We walked on average 20km per day. The task is not too challenging if you are used to walking, especially because we did not have to carry our backpacks (since all bags are moved from one hotel to the other by the organisers). Nevertheless, we felt quite exhausted at the end of each walking day and we liked the relaxing feeling of our rest.
To conclude, we would recommend the Rota Vicentina to anyone who appreciates walking in unspoiled nature, by the ocean.
