Walking in La Gomera – Canary Islands
Tour Description
Walking in La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey.
La Gomera island sits in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa. It is the 2nd smallest Island in Spain’s Canary Island group. It consists of volcanic mountains which contain many varied walking trails from beaches, through deep green valleys to the higher altitudes of dense rain forest tracks. It is a walker’s paradise and most people visiting this Island are here for that very reason. Walking through the moss-covered trees in the high National Park of Garajonay is a real treat with wonderful views across the island and the Atlantic Ocean.
It only has a few towns with San Sabastian being the capital of the island.
Where we are staying: We will be staying on the West Coast in the Valle Gran Rey deep in a beautiful valley. Which leads past the whitewashed cliffside village of La Calera and ends at black-sand Atlantic beaches.
It is a very German resort with many of them arriving in the 70’s, tuning in and dropping out, so there is a very chilled bohemian feel to Valle Gran Ray.
Accommodation: Due to the nature of the Island and the small town where we will be staying, it is impossible to get the group all in the one accommodation. It will be a mix of apartments and villas close to each other. The accommodation we use though will be of a great standard, comfortable and clean. Some apartments may have access to pools and all will be close to shops, restaurants and the beach.
Travel Insurance:
You need to have full travel insurance that covers you up to 1500m.
Everyone is responsible for their own safety at all times.
Cancellation Policy for Walking in La Gomera:
A cancellation fee of 100% applies for cancellations made less than 2 weeks in advance, or in case of no-show.
A cancellation fee of 50% applies for cancellations made less than 4 weeks in advance.
No cancellation fee applies for cancellations made 4 weeks or more in advance.
About The Walks
About the Walks: We will be doing a selection of walks throughout the week, none of which will be flat. They will vary in scenery and trails from deep valleys to thick rain forests and open mountain tracks. The walks can be steep in parts but the trails zig zag towards the summit. We will walk at a pace to suit the group and take our time at the steeper portions.
The walks will range from 12Km to longer 16Km trails with some having an incline of 1000m from the Sea shore.
We will not be putting a day-to-day Itinerary for each walk as the walk we decide to do each day will depend on the weather and access.
Please note: You do need to be comfortable with steep ascents and descents, narrow roads with plenty of bends, and on occasion, cliff walks with deep drops. A good level of fitness is essential also. Trail shoes were sufficient and many of the group also used poles.
Jutta (the Guide) will choose the routes and lead the walks. This will probably include the highest point of the island (1435m) and we will also take in some of the lovely rain forest at the top of the island. As with all our trips, we will all stay behind the leader.
Transfers for the walks: Transfer on the Island is not included in cost. It will be arranged when required by our guide. The cost is split between everyone on the day it can range from just €4 to €15pp per day. (Revolut is a great way to share the cost)
