Mountain Skills Courses: Parts I and II

This is a two day course which is recognised by BOS (Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe). Which is the Irish Mountain Training Board.

The Mountain Skills course is for your own personal confidence on the hills or a foundation to further your skills towards a leadership qualification. The course will also provide you with the skill set to navigate correctly in the hills. There is also advice on how to keep safe while walking and hiking.


Mountain Skills Part 1 Course.

This course normally takes place in the Dublin Wicklow area. (although we do offer them in other parts of the country)

You should have a reasonable level of Fitness and some previous Hill walking experience.

Your Instructor is fully Qualified with appropriate First Aid (REC 3 or higher) and recognised by Mountaineering Ireland as a qualified provider of the course.

Part 1 Mountain Skills Course covers the following topics:

  • Map Reading
  • Navigation Techniques.
  • Grid References.
  • Compass work.
  • Features on a Map.
  • Pacing and Timing.
  • Mountain Hazards.
  • Route Planning.
  • Personal Equipment.
  • Mountain Environment.
  • Leave No Trace Principles.

These mountain courses are for your own personal confidence on the hills or a foundation to further your skills towards a leadership qualification.

It will show you some of the skills required to keep you safe while out walking. Such as Map reading and compass work, what to wear on a walk and other equipment advice. Advice on emergency situations and how to handle them.

The Mountain Skills Courses are organized and run by a qualified and recognized BOS Instructor Terry Lambert who is a qualified instructor with numerous years experience on the mountains.

These Mountain Skills courses will take place in the Wicklow Mountains over 2 days. Both in a classroom and the outdoors.
The outdoors session gives the chance to put all the theory you will have gained into practice.

These Mountain Skills Courses are given by a recognized Mountain Leader and provider with Mountaineering Ireland.
