Day 1: Arrival Oughterard
There is a very good bus service from Galway city to Oughterard. We will provide you with travel details to get you to Oughterard. Settle into your accommodation and prepare for some spectacular walking trails in the coming days.

Day 2: Oughterard - Maam Cross 21km , approx. 5 hours, elevation 115m
Todays walk takes you from the flatter landscape of Galway into the beginning of a wilder landscape carved out by nature over 600 million years. A boardwalk path protects the delicate bogland environment from erosion and makes for a very pleasant and relatively flat days walking today. A view of the stunning Maumturks will end your day of walking in the Maam valley leaving you eager to experience the wilder side of Connemara.

Day 3: Maam Valley - Lough Inagh 15km , 5 hours, ascent 300m
The word Maam comes from the Irish word Mam, meaning mountain pass. This hints at the nature of todays trail. The approach to Maumean, the pass you will cross to reach the Inagh Valley, is a long but very gradual climb. You will be rewarded at the top with unrivalled views of the Twelve Bens and the Inagh Valley. Nestled at the top of the pass is a tiny church, a lovely spot to sit and take some time.

Day 4: Lough Inagh to Leenane 15km, 5 hours, ascent 100m
Flanked by the Maumturks on your right and the Twelve Bens on your left, you will leave the Inagh valley along forestry trails to be rewarded with your first views of Killary harbour, Irelands only fjord. Leenane awaits with good food, music and perhaps a pint of the black stuff.

Day 5:Extra day Leenane
Today you have several options, such as walking the famous Famine trail from Rossroe to Killary, visit Kylemore House and Gardens or take a taxi to Cleggan and ferry to Inishboffin island for the day.

Day 6: Leenane - Drummin  18km , 6 to 7 hours, ascent 570m
Leaving leenane and Co Galway behind, your walk into the Sheefry hills offers up some stunning views of the Erriff valley, an upland area farmed according to very old traditions which have shaped the land for centuries.

Day 7: Drummin – Westport 22km, 7 to 8 hours, ascent 390m
Walking at the foot of Croagh Patrick today, the trail takes you around this mountain which is a world famous pilgrimage site where thousands of people come every year to reach the top, sometimes barefoot for prayer. After you leave Croagh patricks shadow you follow a coastal route into Westport town, where traditional music is never difficult to find and the craic is mighty.

Day 8: Departure from Westport
Bus and train services from Westport are excellent and we will provide you with all the travel details you will need to get you back to the airport or on to your next destination.


Average Persons Walking speed is 4Km ph so most walks are approx 4-5hrs per day at a pleasant pace.

  • A cancellation fee of 100% applies for cancellations made less than 7 days in advance, or in case of no-show.
  • A cancellation fee of 50% applies for cancellations made less than 2 weeks in advance.
  • A cancellation fee of 25% applies for cancellations made less than 4 weeks in advance.
  • No cancellation fee applies for cancellations made 4 or more weeks in advance
