This small peninsula is located in West Cork in the very South West of the country. It is an absolute gem and a beautiful hidden treasure for walking in Ireland. It is along part of the Wild Atlantic Way with the town of Bantry sitting at the top of it and a great place to start exploring this area.  The landscape is so beautiful and unspoilt that it has been recognised as a European Destination of Excellence.A premier location for a walking holiday in Ireland. We will organise everything for you, we even move your bags each day. Backpacking without the backache.

The Trail: The Sheep’s Head Way is a Long Distance Walk over 150km encompassing the Sheep’s Head Peninsula. It is a very well sign posted trail that takes you right around the whole peninsula from Bantry town to the lighthouse at the very bottom and back again. The walks are broken down into manageable stages approx 20Km each day and there’s even a choice of a lower easier route or a slightly harder higher one. Whichever you decide to do you will not be disappointed. The accommodation we have chosen will also drop you of at points along the way and pick you back up to make your walks even more enjoyable.

The tracks are along the coastlines over looking the Atlantic Ocean with impressive cliffs to one side and beautiful small steams, valleys and hills to the other. There are many places along the way to relax sit down and take in the incredible views.

I would rate the walks of a moderate type with a small amount of incline.

The Sheep’s Head Trail was developed by a committee of locals and farmers who are more than happy to assist you in any way they can.

Getting to Bantry:  Daily bus service from Cork to Bantry and on Saturdays from Bantry to Durrus, Ahakista, Kilcrohane.

Check up to date timetables at Bus Eireann or call (021) 508188.
Bantry Rural Transport: Please check locally for timetables [027] 52727 .
Hackneys: There are numerous hackneys available - please ask locally.
Cork has an international airport and a ferryport at Ringaskiddy which connects with Swansea in Wales, and St. Malo, Roscoff and Le Havre in France.Blue cottage Ireland

The Food: People on this peninsula are very proud of their local produce and all the food is locally sourced and fresh. You should try some of the Durrus cheese which is definitely one of my personal favourites. There are many shops along the way which sell local produce and the mini market in Kilcrohane just sells these products and well worth a visit. Obviously being a peninsula sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean there are also many fine fish dishes.

Arts and Crafts: This Peninsula is also a magnet for bohemian types who like to create very fine unique pottery and other crafts. There are a few galleries, craft and pottery shops along the way.

Accommodation: We have personally selected the best accommodation for you to stay in while visiting this area. All the accommodation have en suite rooms which are relaxing, clean and comfortable with wifi. The owners are also friendly and full of local knowledge about where you can eat and things to see and do while there.

What to wear / bring.
Good walking boots are recommended.
Obviously, be prepared for the inevitable changing weather of West Cork; bringing along rain gear, adequate food and water, maps etc. would be prudent. Also, fog can come down quickly along the coast at the end of the peninsula and at the top of the hill along the Bantry Bay side. In such conditions map reading ability and the use of a compass would be required; carrying a whistle is a basic safety measure, we recommend carrying a mobile phone also. You will be supplied with maps of this area from us.
