Finding north is not enough! (but it's a start...)
Most of us are only too aware of the rules of the mountains. Leave no trace behind, dress appropriately, tell someone exactly where you are going and when you will be back, and don't go hill walking alone. And of course, bring a map and compass! Even if you are only going for a few hours or a day trip.

But how many of us can actually use a map and compass? The weekly reports of adventurous hill walkers in the Wicklow and Dublin Mountains coming into 'difficulties' and needing the services of mountain rescue would suggest that there are more of us becoming 'geographically embarrassed' than we would care to admit. In most cases it only results in some embarrassment on behalf of the wayward hiker, but the consequences could be fatal.

Anyone with a keen interest in hill walking and hiking has at some stage experienced that stomach clenching feeling of being lost, even if it was only for a matter of seconds. And believe me - there is no worse feeling!
This course is designed to help you read your map and compass and know the basics of keeping safe in the hills.
Whether you are already in a club or just enjoy a ramble this skill set could keep you out of harms way.

Meeting: Enniskerry at 10am at the Clock Tower

Talk on Walking clothes and equipment in local outdoor shop. (Here you can buy maps and compasses for the course, if you don’t already have them or know what to get)
Break for coffee

Indoors: Learn the basics of map reading, setting a map, using a compass, taking a bearing, how to follow that bearing, Timing, Pacing and measurements of map and track.

Outdoors: We will then go out onto a hill nearby for some orienteering and put what you have learnt into practice.
Practice makes perfect! This is just an introduction course but it will give you a better understanding of how to get about the hills in a safer manner.

The Course will finish up approx 4pm.

Russborough House and Photography. http://www.russboroughhouse.ie russ exterior sm -res

Russborough is an 18th century Palladian Mansion sitting in an idyllic location in County Wicklow next to the Blessington lakes and overlooking the Wicklow hills. Once owned by the Leeson Family from Milltown who made there fortune in Brewing and Property.  It was also owned by Sir Alfred’s and Lady Beit who liked to socialise with the elite of society during their life time in the 20th century. There are many fascinating pictures of their close friends and associates with in the house. Some of the photographs picture Charlie Chaplin, Jackie Kennedy, Bing Crosby, Coco Channel as well as many other well known celebrities of this era.

Sir Alfred travelled throughout the world with a passion for photography and also recorded some of his images in 3D format from as early as the 1920s.

3D – Photographs and Movie.
A few years ago 5000 3D glass negatives and cinema footage of Sir Alfred’s world travels were discovered in the basement. To honour Sir Alfred’s love and gift of capturing magical moments with his camera, we have called our exhibition a 3D exhibition but there are so many more layers and interactive aspects to this unique exhibition to stimulate and be enjoyed by young and old alike.
You can now enjoy a 3D film showing many of these incredible images, a real unique treat complete with 3D glasses. Really has to be seen.
